The Enneagram and Spiritual Growth: Discovering the Patterns That Shape Us

How greater self-awareness can become a doorway into deeper freedom, love and spiritual formation.

If you’d like to understand the theological framework that shapes my approach to teaching the Enneagram, you may wish to read my first blog post, “How I Teach the Enneagram.”

One of the greatest gifts the Enneagram offers is deeper self-awareness. It helps us recognise not only how we behave, but some of the motivations and patterns underlying why we behave the way we do.

For me, the Enneagram has become far more than a personality framework. It has become a valuable psychological tool on my journey of spiritual formation, helping me recognise patterns that had been operating beneath the surface of my life for years.

The Big Picture

Self-awareness can become a doorway to knowing God more deeply, surrendering more fully, and becoming more like Christ.

Three Quotes That Have Shaped My Understanding

Three quotations have profoundly influenced how I think about the Enneagram and spiritual growth.

“The Enneagram can serve as a psychological assist on our faith journey.” — Russ Hudson

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” — Jesus, Matthew 7:3

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” — Commonly attributed to Rumi

Although these words come from different traditions, taken together they point towards an important principle:

Honest self-awareness can become a doorway to genuine transformation.

Why Self-Awareness Matters

The Enneagram is one of the most helpful psychological tools I’ve encountered because it can help us recognise the self we’ve been living from.

It doesn’t transform us by itself. Rather, it can reveal the unconscious patterns, motivations and fears that can keep us from living in the freedom God desires for us.

I can personally testify to this. Before discovering my Enneagram type, I had no idea how much fear was driving my life. But now that I see it, I can’t unsee it.

Becoming aware of these patterns has given me opportunities to bring them into the light, become more honest before God, and increasingly surrender them to Him.

For me, this is where the Enneagram becomes particularly valuable.

The goal isn’t simply to know ourselves better. Self-awareness is not the destination. Rather, it can become a doorway into greater awareness of God, deeper surrender, and participation in the transforming work of Holy Spirit.

In Christian transformation, I believe God-awareness ultimately matters more than self-awareness. Self-awareness helps us recognise what is happening within us; God-awareness draws us into relationship with the One who transforms us.

As Paul writes:

“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” — 2 Corinthians 3:18

Understanding my type has therefore helped me grow in what I believe are three of the most important relationships in life:

Our relationship with God

Our relationship with ourselves

Our relationship with others

These relationships are deeply interconnected. As we become more aware of ourselves, we can become more honest before God. And as we become more aware of God’s presence, love and grace, we can begin to see ourselves and others differently.

The Enneagram, then, is not the source of transformation.

God is.

The Enneagram is simply one tool that can help us become more aware of the patterns we have been living from, so that we can bring our whole selves into deeper relationship with God and become more fully the people He created us to be.

How the Enneagram Reveals Our Patterns

The Enneagram has helped me recognise and take responsibility for the automatic patterns that shape the way I think, feel and relate to others.

Many of these patterns developed as intelligent adaptations to life’s circumstances. They’re the strategies we learned to protect ourselves, respond to challenges and navigate the world around us.

These strategies often served us well. But what once helped us survive can eventually become the very thing that prevents us from living with greater freedom, authenticity and love.

This is true of every Enneagram type.

Each type represents a pattern of unconscious motivations and coping strategies that influences the way we perceive, interpret and respond to life. In moments of pressure, these patterns can be remarkably effective. Yet when they become our default way of living, they can quietly limit our ability to love freely, receive love from others and respond with greater awareness.

The Nine Patterns: How This Can Look

Type One

Learns that goodness comes through doing what is right. Their integrity and desire for justice are beautiful gifts, but perfectionism and harsh self-criticism can become heavy burdens.

Type Two

Learns to gain love by being needed. Their generosity blesses those around them, but they may struggle to believe they are already loved apart from what they do for others.

Type Three

Learns to earn value through achievement. Their drive inspires others, but they can gradually lose touch with who they are beneath their accomplishments.

Type Four

Learns to seek identity through authenticity and emotional depth. Their creativity enriches the world, but they may feel that something essential is always missing.

Type Five

Learns to find safety through knowledge and self-sufficiency. Their wisdom and insight are invaluable, yet they may withdraw from life to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Type Six

Learns to seek security through preparation, loyalty and anticipating problems. Their faithfulness and commitment are tremendous gifts, but fear can begin to shape decisions more than trust.

Type Seven

Learns to avoid pain by pursuing possibilities and keeping life open. Their optimism brings hope and energy, yet they may struggle to remain present with suffering and limitation.

Type Eight

Learns to stay strong so they cannot be controlled or harmed. Their courage protects and empowers others, but vulnerability can begin to feel unsafe.

Type Nine

Learns to keep the peace by avoiding conflict. Their calm and steady presence is deeply comforting, yet they can gradually lose touch with their own voice, desires and priorities.

The Goal: Freedom, Not a Label

None of these strategies are wrong in themselves. In fact, they often helped us adapt to the world we grew up in.

The difficulty comes when we continue relying on them long after they’ve stopped serving us. What once protected us can quietly become the very thing that limits our freedom to love God, ourselves and others.

The Enneagram doesn’t ask us to become someone else. Instead, it can help us become more aware of who we’ve become, creating space to bring those patterns before God and learn to respond with greater freedom, compassion and love.

My Own Experience

Learning my Enneagram type has given me greater confidence, deeper self-awareness and more compassion for myself and others.

I’m genuinely grateful this tool came into my life when it did. For me, it has become a valuable psychological companion on my journey of faith.

Perhaps, for you too, discovering your Enneagram type could become the beginning of a deeper journey towards self-awareness, freedom and spiritual growth.
